Equality, regardless of sex, is a fundamental human right. When elected, it will be Michele's first priority to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). It is important we ratify the ERA because although some individual protections and statutes exist, they can be repealed or rolled back. We can do more to prevent discrimination with the simple, nonpartisan words, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
The overwhelming majority of Americans don't realize that except for women's right to vote, the Constitution does not protect against discrimination based on sex. By becoming the 38th and last state necessary to ratify the ERA, Virginia could once again play an important role in shaping the growth of our nation.
